Help us find a cure for Tay-Sachs

Tay-Sachs disease is a rare inherited disorder that progressively destroys nerve cells (neurons) in the brain and spinal cord.

The most common form of Tay-Sachs disease becomes apparent in infancy. Infants with this disorder typically appear normal until the age of 3 to 6 months, when their development slows and muscles used for movement weaken. Affected infants lose motor skills such as turning over, sitting, and crawling. They also develop an exaggerated startle reaction to loud noises. As the disease progresses, children with Tay-Sachs disease experience seizures, vision and hearing loss, intellectual disability, and paralysis. An eye abnormality called a cherry-red spot, which can be identified with an eye examination, is characteristic of this disorder. Children with this severe infantile form of Tay-Sachs disease usually live only into early childhood.

Eli's Story

"When two young and healthy people get married and decide to start a family, the risk for complications is very low. So low in fact, that a lot of testing for disorders or diseases are not even ordered by some doctors. We were that couple. Our pregnancy went along as normal with no complications, no issues and delivery was normal. In fact our healthy baby boy was perfect. He developed normally; he hit all his milestones quickly and thrived.

To our surprise at 18 months old he had a seizure sitting on our bed. The doctors brushed it off, stating that some kids at one point in their lives will have at least one seizure. Can you imagine our fear when the next one happened and then the next one and they continued nonstop? So then our journey began in and out of the Children’s hospital, medication after medication, and even a surgery, but to no avail.

My motherly instinct told me that the doctor’s diagnosis of epilepsy could not just be our son’s problem. There had to more wrong due to Eli regressing so much in a short amount of time. So after more tests we got the heartbreaking truth about our little boy. Our son was dying from a rare genetic disease called Tay-Sachs.

Tay-Sachs is a hereditary neuro-degenerative disease. It’s a build-up of fatty acid on the brain which causes sections of the brain to become deprived of all functions and die. A person with Tay-Sachs slowly looses different functions; walking, eating, hearing, eyesight, etc. Eventually, the part of the brain controlling the heart and lungs will die as well. There are various mutations of this disease. The most common is Infantile, then there is Juvenile, and lastly there is Late Onset. The Infantile and Juvenile forms of the disease have never been treatable and have always resulted in death. Late Onset form works at a slower pace. The pace of the disease depends on which form the person has.

We are blessed that Eli has just celebrated his 9th birthday. We are saddened that his life expectancy is only 10-15 years old. But we are hopeful that even though there may not be enough time for our sweet little boy, we will be able to help raise money for research and awareness about this horrible disease. We started doing two car shows a year with all proceeds going to two foundations that help fight this disease. They are the Cure Tay-Sachs Foundation and the National Tay-Sachs and Allied Diseases."
