Men’s Journal has ‘Gear Lab Certified’ the Giant Via 1 as “Best for Leisurely Commuters” in the October issue, noting: “This steel-framed steed may look like a decades-old cruiser, but a few well-considered updates turn it into a smart, capable daily ride. A rustproof chain, internal gearing, and custom fenders beat the wet; a front rack provides space for your stuff; and a frame-mounted carrier makes stowing your U-lock easy.”
I’m not sure how “leisurely” the test went for the editors, however. Checking the fine print at the bottom of the page: “Eight testers in New York City rotated more than a dozen bikes on commutes ranging from two to 10 miles. The inferior rides, we sent back; the superior ones you see here. While reporting this story, we also racked up two accidents, resulting in two hospital visits, one surgically reconstructed elbow, and more than a few bumps and scrapes. A message that bears repeating: Always wear a helmet. Seriously.”
